It was a clash between smalltime corruption and bigtime corruption. A bent property developer had bought the local council in order to slide a dodgy development application through; Westfields, disadvantaged by this development, went over his head and bought the State government in order to trump him. Standard crookedness on all sides.
As to the Civil War historian bit, Bob, ever a patron of the arts, actually performed his favourite oration as part of a literary event a few years back. It was a whole host of famous folk - politicians, actors, etc, and they each got to pick their piece.
Bless Him indeed. You know I've been wondering at what age I should start to call myself Bob. And well now that Bob Carr is out of the public spotlight, it may just be time for Bob Pech to emerge like a butterfly from his coccoon!!
