He will live going one day without lunch. Children break umbrellas. It is a part of the natural order of life. Whenever I give Tempest an umbrella I consider it a lost cause. He is 8, he can make his own sandwich. Being a step-parent is not easy, I have been there and it takes alot of work to get to a comfortable point on both ends. Vent away.

Parenting is a perfect forum for that idea of Letting perfection become the enemy of good. Children need to know that they are capable human beings, so you are really a good parent for helping him to do things for himself.
