Dracschick's review of new PBS Dracula: The good, the bad and the ugly or (with spoilers)

simply just what a big mess. Yep, didn't like it. Though not for the reasons that I thought I wouldn't like it. Ya see, I cheated and read blogs of others who saw the movie so I knew what would happen. But, I didn't actually see the movie so some things that were previously described bothered me a little less. And some, bothered me a little more.

My notes while watching: (I actually doodled them on a piece of paper) In no particular order.

Sexually transmitted diease wtf?

Van Helsing/Renfield Hybrid wtf?

Excellent *oldlooking* Drac. Classic yummy yucky monster goodness.

Subplot interesting, badly done like whoa.

Vampire wanna-be cult? Has the writer been watching Buffy?

EEee!! It's Helena! (Mina)
Eeee!! It's Madame DuPompador! (Lucy)

Anyway:

Since it's not my fandom the thing I was most stressed about was how little they gave poor ol' Marc to work with. I would have liked to see him talk for longer intervals. That and what the hell was up with the squashy emo hair? I wanted to give him a bath and cut his hair. *gives Marc a hug*

good notes........ dracschick February 13 2007, 03:07:32 UTC
thanks for sharing. yep, the movie had no definitive direction and like some of my flist pointed out, was just dull.

PS--Marc could look a lot better. I didn't like the Hyde look.

Damn. I was really hoping with the BBC/PBS we would finally get a really great, definitive version. Why does every single version of it have to deviate from the book so much? The whole thing just sounds stupid. I forgot it was on. I'll have to catch it on dvd. I did think Lucy was well-cast. Sophia Myles is a beautiful actress and she just has that ethereal beauty and sexiness that I think Lucy should have, and like you said, without making her a big slut, which is where a lot of the versions go.

yep, this was just a confused movie. The best Dracula IMO is still the BBC 1977 Louis Jourdan Dracula version. Stuck to the storyline and pretty much everyone was in character.

Though I do so love the Dracula in London Mina/Dracula scenes with Oldman and Ryder. Really good, sexy stuff.

I don't want to choose between them:)

That's kind of how I felt....but the Dracula/Lucy sex scene? Hot.

yep and........... dracschick February 13 2007, 03:09:26 UTC
if they had stuck to a sexy Dracula, or really, any ONE theme (sexy, scary, perverse, etc), I would have given the movie a higher rating. It just didn't have a definitive direction.

PS--I was hoping for some good Mina/Dracula scenes since the Lucy scenes were sexy but unfortunately, that was as 'sexy' as it got. Which was sad for this Dracula/Mina fan:(

*nods* I agree. and I really, really didn't like Mina either.

Mina was too...plain......... dracschick February 13 2007, 03:25:44 UTC
I don't mind her being 'different' from Lucy but she should be sexy too (in her own way) since Dracula is attracted to her.

there wasn't much to like about it.

If it had been a fan fic, I probably would not have finished reading it.
The jerky, flashy (cheesey) cenemotography didn't help make it scary, it just made it look cheep.

I did like the costums and the locations. I thought they made the class distinction between Mina and Lucy just a little to dramatic.

The actor playing Dracual made him seem very creepy, to me. It was how he moved when he was an old man and talked like someone who had not talked for a long time. But he still moved the same way after he became young again. Somehing was off, maybe because he didn't seem that sexy to me?

Bad writing and bad direction......... dracschick February 13 2007, 03:29:24 UTC
Seems like Dracula was going for a low key performance. Only thing was, it was so low keyed, it came off as being very odd and rather forgettable. Like the movie.

PS--Costumes and sets were good. I agree, Mina came off as much too plain.
