Hey, forgive my impertinence, but I was wondering about a couple of things in your scenario. Did you take your cat to an emergency vet, or do you have a regular vet/pet hospital? The reason I ask is because, a couple of years ago, when Bela got horribly sick, I had to take him to the Emergency Vet. They did their thing, and I got a bill for about $1000. He had a recurrence a couple days later, and we took him to the regular pet hospital, where they redid the catheter, and gave him fluid therapy and boarding for a few days, all for about 1/4 the price (including his outpatient meds). They ended up being able to take care of it for a very reasonable price (less than $100). The points being ( ... )

It's an e-vet, but he's coming home tonight. He's got another appointment with regular vet next week. I'm sure I'm paying more than I would at a regular vet, but when I called 4 different vets on Monday, no one would see him.

I know how terribly frustrating all of it can be. Usually, with a regular vet, they will let you bring in your cat in an emergency, and charge you a flat extra fee for not having an appointment (at mine, I believe it's $50). This is very different than taking him to an e-vet, where the rates are just always astronomical, because they know you've got no choice. Hopefully your regular vet is someone you like, as it can make it much easier to deal with. I'm sure he'll be happy to be coming home again though.
