Went out to my old neighbor's house last night and stayed far too late. When I got out to my car, it wouldn't start. We live where we can walk too and the stores near us are sort of pricey. But we find is that if we drive around to bargain shop, we end up buying more stuff than we would if we just went to our regular stores. Yeah, I can get stuff cheaper at Target- but there's so much more cool stuff there than I went for- and I always want some of it!

Yeah, exactly. There is a chain of stores here called Marc's, I know people who find amazing deals there. But everytime I go to Marc's, I end up spending at least 5 to 10 dollars on stuff I really don't need, just because it's such a great deal. I can be the same way with sales--Joanns has a sale on fabric, I go to buy fabric and end up buying an additional 20.00 of stuff. I've been trying really hard when I shop to make a list and stick to it, or make up little rules--I can go to the sale, but I can buy x amount of fabric and that's it, no wondering the aisles.

I've been doing the without-a-car thing for two years now, and I also live in an urban area that is predominantly poor (though increasingly gentrified by the month.) Here, there have been some socially minded people making efforts in the right direction: we have a co-op going in downtown this summer, a Big Lots and supermarket ten minutes away by bus, and a flourishing antiques/arts district within walking distance, an awesome farmer's market year-round. There's a Goodwill and a Salvation Army ten minutes away by bus as well. Unfortunately, we had to wait a while before the right people moved here and wanted to ally to make a change ( ... )
