I am not a photographer, but I have experience lighting people and still lifes for painting "daylight." There are a couple of options. I use ceramic base clamp lights (can't be metal where you screw in the bulb, because it will blow the bulb in a short time) with either a full spectrum bulb, or a high wattage UV bulb. I get the UV bulbs at Home Depot for about $6.

Thanks! I will give that a try, especially since with winter coming daylight hours are going to be greatly reduced. It's something I really need to play with, because with strong light there are often unwanted shadows and then I need to figure out how to deal with that

Two clamp lights, pointed at the object from 45 degree angles, should help you avoid the unwanted shadows. This is how we are taught to light painting and sculpture for portfolio slide taking. Could work for you too!
