My computer problems seem to be over for the time being. I tried a few long-shots this evening after work and lo and behold-- one of them worked! HP was no help. I'm glad that I don't have to call them again. I'm not sure what I'm going to do about XP, maybe it's just not going to happen. I might look into dual-booting Linux, if I can verify

Really, everything is awesome.
As far as Linux goes, in my experience you will find that MORE hardware will work on it than Windows Vista/7. It sounds a little counterintuitive at first, until you think about it. Since Linux is opensource, if there is somebody who wants a feature/driver/program, there probably exists something like it, even if it is only in the alpha stages. So it might not always be *easy* to get something to work, but you usually can.
Older things tend to have better support on Linux, since Microsoft phases them out for newer hardware but people keep supporting it on Linux. The latest and greatest hardware tends to be less supported on Linux because it takes time for Linux developers to reverse engineer drivers or software.
With that said, though I can't guarantee the scanner will work, but I would say that it most likely will. My remote, TV tuner, and the old digital camera I had all didn't work on Vista/7, but worked just fine in Linux ( ... )
