Yeah, I've gotten that far with siSwati ... post coming up soon. I think I've got a good grip on the basics (I tested well at the end of training); it's stuff like adjective agreement that's killing me now.

I've already seen enough non-closing side doors to give me bad dreams for the rest of my life!

Khumbis (sometimes spelled kombis) are large vans that stand idle at their departure points (usually cities) until they are full.

And now the education begun by Men At Work is now complete.

The song "Down Under" by Men At Work opens with the line, "Travelling in a fried-out [k]ombi, on a hippie trail, head full of zombie." I had the impression that a kombi was a sort of VW microbus deal from the video, but now I know the whole story.

(The next line is the title of the comment. So. Yeah.)

I'm not sure you could write a boring blog post if you tried. Not that that would be a worthwhile goal, but, based on past experience, your posts are always worth reading.

I can't tell you how happy it makes me that your first Swaziland post talks about the libraries.

Aww. I'd blush if I weren't all sunburned. What's your email address, by the way?

Marie has found a very similar situation regarding reading in Tanzania; -soma means both "read" and "study" and, she finds, really has not much room for the idea of reading-for-pleasure.

I'll be back in Tanzania some time early this coming year, I anticipate; I should like to come down and see you, if we can coordinate something.

The "we're backwards and undeveloped" syndrome was one I encountered in Japan, too, which I found really disconcerting. But hey! Neo-colonialism whee!
