They're very loud, especially in the morning! We have one that hangs around our roof in the mornings and he lets everyone know he's up :)

The kids are all fine :)

It is pretty scary and someone could have so easily been seriously injured. I've actually hand fed a kookaburra before, but that was one who sought out human interaction for treats at a holiday village we stayed at years ago. I wouldn't dare trust one of the local birds not to hurt me.

Oh yes! Your fear of birds would have sent you straight out the window! These birds are big and can be very mean. A panicked one is just down right dangerous, simply because of the beak and claws (they're meat eaters, so you can imagine how sharp everything is).

Maddy's fine. Her scratch in nothing :)
