That is Merlin's curse, to watch his lover die, over and over again, sometimes having never known him. The progression of years, the obsessive counting, spoke so loudly of his loneliness and heartbreak.
And because I am geeky like that, I did the arithmetic. *g*
I imagined Arthur living quietly in England while Charles Martel led his armies against the Moors, of Arthur living with Morgana under the reign of William and Mary, the horror of trench warfare and a mere glimpse, before yet another loss in 1917. *sighs*
But you made it right with recognition in the sixties. That made up for all the rest.
