i stumbled upon this web site about a town called centralia, pennsylvania.
the town has been abandoned because the ground caught on fire 42 years ago
and it's still burning. evidently a fire in a garbage dump over an open
coal seam started and from what i gather the coal deposits under the earth
have been burning ever since.
