That was the most depressing thing I've read lately. I appreciate the scientific insight and approach to the mind, but it stomps all over romantic idealism. It removes the wonder from the system.

Hmm. Knowing you like Martin tells me a little about your tastes... read any Vernor Vinge? A Fire Upon the Deep, A Deepness in the Sky? Most excellent (read them in that order, is what I reccommend). Vinge also has some other stuff, short stories and novelas (sp?), that are entertaining.

Guy Gavriel Kay writes some good fantasy; I've only read Tigana (standalone), but have yet to meet anyone who didn't like his other stuff. I have heard good things about Robin Hobb's The Liveship Traders series, but have not read it. Book 7 of Dark Tower is out; I'm about 7/8 of the way through it, it is very emotionally wrenching.

Ever read any Steven Brust? You might enjoy The Pheonix Guards, which is set in a fantasy world but written in the style of The Three Musketeers. It has several sequals that vaguely mirror the plots of Dumas's successive novels.

You might like Gene Wolfe's Shadow and Claw (comprised of Shadow of the Torturer and Claw of the Conciliator) - have a dictionary on hand when reading. Very dense stuff, incredible

I'll concur on Shadow and Claw. I also recommend Latro in the Mist, by the same author. Not exactly science fiction- more like historical fiction- but with the premise that the protagonist has no ability to form long-term memories, and the same classical erudition of his other works.

Thanks for the recommendations.

I've read some Vinge, but didn't take to it for some reason. I'll look into Wolfe as you're both fans. As to King, I'm waiting for the 5th book to hit softback, or a loan from a friend. I already own 1-4 in the softback version....

I managed a Book People trip Monday night and bought "Running witch Scissors" and "The Memory of Whiteness" by Kim Stanley Robinson. I enjoyed the Mars trilogy, and hope this follows the pattern.
