As of this morning, I am 100% debt free. It's looking like Tom and I are going to hold off on buying a house for now, so I decided to dip into my savings and just blow the remainder of my student loans away. I'm getting an enormously liberated feeling from the knowledge that at this point, I'm officially in the black for the first time since high ( Read more... )

When the total achievements start to approach 1000, I'm going to start getting concerned... How you doing, by the way? We never get to talk much anymore these days.

Must be nice! We still have two or three decades left just for my wife's college loans.

But once you and Tom buy a house, won't you go right back to debt canceling your life achievement? :-P

BAH. Since interest on house payments is less than income tax (house payments are made before taxes), I count that as an investment with active returns.

I could theoretically do that but I wouldn't have much left, which might be a bad idea since as a grad student I use my stipend for living expenses and need my savings for large irregular expenses like car and computer. I throw large chunks of money at my loans when I have extra left over from my stipend though, 'cause yeah. It used to be that my savings interest was bigger than my loan interest, but not any more with the recession, so paying the loan becomes a good idea again.

Congratulations on your achievement and your having better financial sense than 90% of the population!

Works on the same principle as XBox Live points, so I get to keep it no matter what |:3. Anyhow, I wouldn't try to pay it off all at once if I were still in school. If Tom gets a full time job at Case though, I'll be able to get grad classes for free though. :DDD

Very nice!  You've achieved something most people should and few people do, so congratulations indeed!

Hopefully not carrying unsustainable debt to fund excessive consumption won't land you on any government watch lists or get you branded as a terrorist. ;)

I imagine that the investigation would go something like this:

Let's go down the list. The suspect...
1) Doesn't like FOOTBAWL or NASCAR.
2) Thinks he's too good to buy more than he can afford on credit cards.
3) GAWDDAMN NOW I'M ALL THINKIN' OF NASCAR AN' DALE ERHEART BLESS HIS SOUL!
4) moonshine
In conclusion: a terroristic comunazi of some sort.

Yeah, if you ever fly across the country you'd better go nonstop so you don't have a connection in the Midwest.  I don't know if they have a separate No Fly list, but you probably shouldn't take the chance. :)

I am so jealous! I'm still planning on being in debt till I'm 90. That's what we get for moving to one of the most expensive parts of the country, I suppose.

Still, you're going into a field where you can strike gold if you make the right discovery, aren't you?
