And now....

I made the promise never again to compare myself to a Tory Spelling-produced daytime special or Oxygen Channel Original.... but I'm breaking that, because if this truly is like one of those overacted melodramas that housewives watch between breakfast and Oprah, then my life is at that point in the show when all *seems* well. The Aruba Wedding went ( Read more... )

oh no! it just hit me that you are leaving. for good!! oh, this is too much!!! i have so many things to say, my dearest dilly, but i've already sweated off 63 pounds from my ass alone, and any more water loss through crying (AT THE DISCOTHEQUE) could lead to light headedness and fainting spells!! so, i guess i'll save the weepy words for another time and electronic media. love you. LOVE YOU. take care, and keep a futon dusted for when i crash in barcelona....

How many years does JET last? I'm planning to apply after I graduate next year--it would be cool to see some old-timers from LJ for some advice. =P

one year officially, but regular teachers can "recontract" for up to three.... i've heard of CIR's (can't remember what the acronymn stands for, but ask starofpersia, who commented below) have extended their stay to even 4 or 5 years.... as far as advice goes, feel free to ask anything and everything!

You're an ALT, right? What were some of the factors you had to take into account when you were deciding which one to apply for? Or maybe it wasn't much of a decion at all?

I'm looking at the ALT program, but the CIR one doesn't seem too bad either. I'm worried my (written) Japanese isn't up to par for the CIR program, though...

What kind of Japanese background did you have when you applied? I heard somewhere that ALT's aren't supposed to be good at Japanese, to take away the temptation to over-use Japanese when teaching English...is that true? =/

yes.... ALT, but i applied for the CIR. embarassingly, i didn't do so well on the POP QUIZ they gave me at my interview, and they called me back asking if i would consider applying instead for the ALT position. i've had lots of experience with japanese (fuck i spent all of my junior year here) but at the time of the interview, i had studied for several months and i guess i just hadn't heard there would be an aptitude test.

as far as the "japanese is good/bad" inquiry, the jury is still out. believe me, noholzba, people spend HOURS debating the criteria for who gets in and who doesn't, but there is JUST NO pattern! some jets are fluent. some don't speak a word. i advise not to worry about it.

I will happily contribute my anxiety disorder to the soap opera of your life. Can I be the sassy fag hag played by Susan Lucci? Wait, you're being played by Susan Lucci!

it doesn't matter who plays you, as long as you make a cameo in this opera sometime down the road.... really, the important thing is that i had the wonderful opportunity to meet you -- that you were a part of my life -- a sexy, saucy, ass-kicking character in this crazy saga. take care, and the best of luck to you. till next time....

I could be reading you wrong as we're still new LJ friends, but did you not enjoy your time in Japan? Did you have a lot of negative experiences? Just curious...

HAHAhahahehehhhmmmmm...uuh...[cough cough]

well, i'm an amazingly resilient and positive person who can put a nice spin on just about anything.... let's just say if i WASN'T like that, i would have fuckin' hit the road in december.... but it was my personal situation that sucked at times, and not the whole of japan or JET itself, per se.

ps. i imagine i'll be fairly reflective in the next few journal entries, and the truth will come out.... whereas so far, my posts have been more of the funny-ha-ha or "LOOK! EVERYTHING IS JUST FINE!!!!" type. afterall, i didn't want to worry my mommy and sisters back home.

well, my big sis's do, and they've been known to worry about their baby bro.... like the time they thought i was a gay prostitute (because i wrote a play about it), or the time they thought i was bulimic (because i had food poisoning), or the numerous times they've called me in the night to make sure i'm being *safe* (because i mention sex jokes ALL THE TIME)!

i LOOOOOOOOOOVE them oh so dearly.

but yeah, when talking with my mom on the phone, i sugar-coat things a bit, so she won't cry or worry. that just kills me!

it's all still in the air.... but i am hoping i will get a yay/nay answer from the drama people by friday. if i am not hired -- we won't talk about that. but if i am hired, work would most def start in late august. if that's the case, my options are 1) move to chiba a few days before you leave, stay at your place until i can find an apt. through the drama folks and move into my own place asap. 2) move to chiba a few days before you leave and stay for the three weeks, working part-time in the area. or 3) go on vacation and move to chiba/tokyo closer to the time the job starts.

in the meantime, i know only two things for certain: i HAVE TO leave my apt. on monday and i will stay with my friend mei until something comes up. moving to chiba depends ENTIRELY on the drama job AND your boe.
