So I've been dicking around with this game idea for months now, and while there's still some details that have yet to be figured out, I feel I have enough to bounce the idea off everyone.
I left a lot out. As I said, I was still working out some ideas, and I know that on this subject, I tend to ramble and give away plot stuff without really meaning to. The whole purpose of the post was to gauge interest with the basics of the idea and, as I get further along and ready to open the game, be a bit more detailed about the whole idea.
It'd hinder getting a playerbase. While small RPs are nice and cozy in a way, few of them have enough momentum to keep going for long.
Of course the point of this is probably just to see if it's plausible with just people you know so yeah no real point if you already know of potential difficulties with strangers.
Making a game with the intent on making it grow to sizes that is palatable to the general LJ RP public is a terrible idea. I want to make a game that I want to play, want to run for whoever wants to play there, not market it towards what the majority want.
Right now, I'm testing the waters, seeing if I can get a small core. If a small core is having fun and there's enough activity, more people may get interested. If it fails? Can't fault me for trying.
It sounds like it could be fun. My general reaction to it is "Good luck, sounds fun, not my cup of tea." I'm just kind of not interested in battles.
I can't really say I have much experience since I ditched my own world, but there might be problems in giving that much freedom, just as there were problems with how restrictive Memento Eden was. Unless you have a few players who are more gung-ho about doing things, people won't venture out to fight. But at the same time, if it's just a few people, the rest might feel left out.
Maybe it is just getting the right sort of players, but I'd prefer to let them have the run of it than constantly asking "Can I do this, can I do that?" The main problems I see with having so much freedom are people saying "oh will you look at that my character found 25% worth of memories over here!" And quite frankly, even if I decided to be a bit more restrictive about it, it's still not stopping the fact that they're most interested in the percentage count first and foremost.
At the same time, I would think that for those not terribly interested in doing so... why app at a game where it's a major focus?
Yeah, true. But, I mean, the problem I kinda mean is it'd feel like level grinding, and people would get bored of the areas once they've done everything a couple times, especially if it's just going to be kinda like environmental differences. Then again, I'm probably underestimating people, too. As you say, why app if they're not interested.
That's not to say that's all there would be, or that I wouldn't have a hand in things if something plot-related was going to happen. I mentioned it with Ammie, but I was trying to remain sparse, partly because I don't want to give too much away and mostly because then this entry would be like nine pages long.
Environmental differences wasn't quite what I was going for, just mentioning freedom of going where you wanted as opposed to being limited to "the area outside of town."

I'm out of touch with the LJ RP scene but are memory loss games um... I heard there was a stigma against them?
