I agree it is really annoying; I hate the assumption that it is all about "pairings", but I'm not going to let that stop me from writing fanfic. And when I put my stories up on my own site, I do not label it with the "genre", nor with the age-rating, nor with the "pairings" (if there are any). For some of them I put the main characters; I also indicate if it's a crossover or AU; if you need to know if it's a romance or violent, you can figure it out from the story-summary.

Of course, when I archive at other sites, I have to abide by their rules.

It's a rule on TPFICT now, and I've seen it a few other places. And I just find it baffling. And I just can't deal with it, for some reason. It makes my skin crawl.

I would agree that this is not a reasonable policy when it comes to things like Tomorrow People fanfics or Power Rangers. I think I might be in favor of some sort of code indicating that the story focuses on relationships or on action. But this is only because so many people are unable to write a short summary that gives the needed information. I also think that the choice to write fanfiction or not, and the choice of where to then post it (or not) are separate choices. Abandoning what is the most popular site for posting such fanfics may cut your audience, but probably not to zero. However, my satisfaction in such an endeavor would not come from the audience but rather from the writing. I would not mind not being read. (Other writing I do need to be read.)
