After all that waiting, once it happens, it happens so fast that Meredith's head is just about spinning after the fact. It happens far too quickly for her to care at all about gathering everyone together for the ceremony itself. She's never really been one for a big wedding, even when she knew more people. In the end, the only people this is really ( Read more... )

Well that’s… sudden. Rory’s known the wedding’s been coming for a while. He doesn’t worry about Meredith or Sean or their relationship like this is some great big sign that things are off and rushed and not meant to be. But he is the tiniest bit peeved when someone comes knocking on his door to tell him that it’s over and done and come to the reception as soon as they could.

Planning his and Amy’s wedding had been hell. A lot of that had been their parents too and the extended family and worrying about this and that and paying the caterer and discussing color patterns with the florist so nothing clashes with the linens and divvying up pieces of the ceremony so no one gets upset and so on and so forth. A lot of stuff that Rory honestly didn’t care that much about and knows Sean and Meredith are better off without. But it’s the principle of the thing, isn’t it? Everyone should have to go through that ( ... )

"Do you dance, Nurse Williams?"

Rachel saw the familiar face, bobbing along and she couldn't resist. It was the charm of the setting, a happy wedding and happy friends and that meant celebrating. She could with celebrating and she was starting with Rory.

"I do indeed, Miss Grey," Rory replied. Weddings made him happy. Even if there was no breathless rush to the alter or a flower girl scraping her knee or the band showing up late, he couldn't help but be pleased. "Especially at weddings. Come on." He didn't bother with shyness or pretense but took a step toward the open dance area while offering her a hand.

Wonderful, because she was definitely in a mood to dance. To dance and drink and be merry, all of the things she was still struggling with on the island. Taking Rory's hand, Rachel was more than happy to be led, not particularly caring what was playing.

"Been to many weddings in your life, Rory?"

Even now, Meredith knows the good mood will only last so long, because that's how good moods go. It doesn't do anything to bring her down now, though. With the wedding itself over, she's not making any special effort not to let her dress trail in the grass - it's not like she'll be wearing it again and, pretty as it is, she has no desire to spend her night consciously fussing over it.

The crowd is fairly small, but that almost makes it matter that much more. They've lost a lot of people over the years between them, a lot who should be here now and can't be. The ones who are still here, though, are here with them. Tonight's a reminder of how good things can be, and she wanders through, all smiles, even if she keeps heading back in Sean's direction.

The only reason that Sean isn't staying glued to her side is because he's making a very concerted effort not to, to get out and talk to the people who have been good enough to come and help out with this particular fit of madness of theirs. It's a brilliant madness, mind, but it's madness all the same, and he can't wait to see how it all feels once things have settled down a bit and it stops feeling like some high fantasy born of too much time spent patrolling in the sun. Even with his myriad attempts at remaining sociable (and even the odd success), though, Meredith remains the center of his attention at all times, as she bloody well should be.

"So," he says, one arm draped loosely around his wife's waist, "have ye given any thought as to what song our first dance should be set to?"

Almost before he's done talking, Meredith tugs him closer for a kiss. She can't help herself. Or she probably could if she tried, but today of all days, she can't imagine why in the world she would. It still doesn't feel quite real, but it does feel right, that they've finally managed to actually do this.

Tucking her chin on his shoulder when she pulls away, she shakes her head. "I don't know," she says. "There are so many choices. And so few, I mean, we really only have your music, you cheater."

"All the more reason f'r ye t'have the final say," Sean replies, an undeniable bit of smugness in his grin. He figures he should get a pass for it today, though, having a whole lot to be smug about besides the type of music playing, and all. "I s'pose we could always hook that Pod thing o' yers up if'n ye're so concerned 'bout musical equality."

The bakery was a place that Sookie went to on a fairly regular basis, always having that soft spot in her heart for a freshly baked pie, or for biscuits readied after one last fry in the pan, but for the past few hours, she'd been caught in the Compound kitchen, trying her best to pull together a cake for the newly married couple. Prettier cakes have come and gone, and there are even a couple in the bakery that tempt Sookie in the worst of ways, but somehow, it's important to her that the happy couple have something that's made just for them. Something made in light of their newfound, married life, and the happiness that it brings. She doesn't have too much time on her hands before she decides to go with a doberge cake, with enough layers to speak of a wedding's indulgence, but homey enough to be for friends and family. Quickly tying her apron right over her dress, for the next five hours, Sookie is completely gone and missing to the world, working on baking each of the six layers and beating the frosting with a frenzied motion. Rachel was blown away at the cake. For an ad hoc island affair, it was brilliant and beautiful and probably a rival to some of the cakes available back home. Sneaking a taste of frosting, she smiled at the blonde baker and gave her a wink.

"Sookie, you have outdone yourself, Sean and Meredith are lucky people to have you cooking for them."

"Rachel, hey!" Sookie greeted as soon as she was address, grinning widely as she made her way over to the other woman and giving her a warm hug. Everything about that day had her feeling sentimental, ready to reach out to friends, ready to pull herself out of everything she'd been caught in since last month, and just ready to live again. It was amazing, what even a glimpse of love could do to a person. That stark reminder that no matter the difficulty, some things could shine through.

She felt lightly teary-eyed as soon as she pulled away, shaking her head vigorously. "You flatter a girl too much," she laughed. "Really, I'm just lucky to know the two of them, this has been... possibly one of the happiest days for me since getting here, like you wouldn't believe. It's not the first wedding that I've been to or anything, but it felt so honest and, I wish everyone could've been there. Though it was still perfect the way it was."

Sookie's excitement was positively contagious and while Rachel was in a good mood, she felt it elevate even more as she returned the hug. It almost seemed that Sookie was happier than the lucky couple, if it were even possible.

"All weddings are good, Sookie, good for the soul and good for the heart." Gesturing back to the cake, she added, "Good for the stomach, too." Rachel had some serious cake envy, she had never mastered the mysteries or baking, never really cooked anything more elaborate the the day-to-day, maybe some soups if she was in a mood.

Milling about the small assembly, jacket and tie having been put aside as the day warmed up, Sean can't think of a single thing that could hold a candle to the way he's feeling right now. From a morning like any other in this place to being a married man in the span of a mere few hours. Honestly, he's not quite sure that he's adequately processed it just yet, but there'll be plenty of time for that later (an entire lifetime, even), and for now, all he needs to know is that he can't remember the last time he was so happy ( ... )

"Hey, married man, congratulations!"

Rachel gave a quick wave as she approached the obviously happy man. She liked weddings, they were always so joyous, the affirmation of everything good and noble. And most of the time they were peaceful affairs, but then she didn't have to worry about the Shi'ar crashing this one, did she.

Rising up, she gave the groom a peck on the cheek and a hug.

There's a slight flush creeping up his cheeks at that which Sean staunchly refuses to acknowledge, too caught up in how good that sounds to his ears to bother caring. "Thank ye kindly," he says with a pleased huff. "It all came together so quickly, I think 'm still a mite shell-shocked by the whole affair. Glad ye could make it, lass."

"Happy to be invited."

And she was. He certainly didn't have to, she was far (far) in his future, but she'd always tried to keep an eye out for him, even if they didn't talk a lot. Then, X-Men, even ones from the distant past, never really needed to do a lot of talking to make friends, did they?

"And very happy for the two of you." Someone deserved it on the island.

There are risks to getting married here... Of course, with the divorce rate on the rise back home, I could argue there are risks to getting married anywhere, but at least a divorce is a choice, even if only made by one party. Here, if you wake up to find that all of your loved one's belongings have been cleared out of the closet, the answer is probably less simple than they left you. More likely, they've been stolen... Shipped off to whence they came... Leaving you an empty shell who's surprised they have anything left to feel.

But I suppose that feeling isn't unique to marriage. It's the risk of loving anyone here, whether it be platonic or romantic. God knows it's how I feel about Rahne, about Moira... Hell, even Brodie.

I'm happy for the couple. I am. But I can only hope for their sake that it lasts. That their vows give them a tether to this place as well as to each other. It wasn't the first wedding reception Jamie had attended on the Island, but it was the first time he'd skipped out on the wedding part first. Despite having ( ... )

"Jamie, m'lad," Sean says, about as chipper as he gets as he thumps Madrox a couple of times on the back in greeting. "Glad t'see ye. What d'ye think of it all?"

There was a time when Sean's greeting would have earned him the answer of not one Jamie Madrox, but at least three. Over two years at Jamie's had been on the Island, and it still caught him off-guard on occasion, when no dupes would appear from being struck, but today, he marveled simply over the fact that he'd managed not to spill his drink.

"Lad? You're married, Cassidy," said Jamie with a knowing arch of his brow, one corner of his mouth hitching upwards, "but I'm still older than you. Don't forget it."

"I'd call ye an' old man, but then where would that leave Wolverine?" Sean asks wryly, moving to fix himself a drink of his own with a shrug. "'Sides, ye're only as old as ye feel, an' it feels as if I've been waitin' a ripe ol' age t'get to today."
