[It actually cheers Egon up immensely to hear this cheerful voice in response. His tone softens noticeably.]

Yes, it does. I've been here almost a month already.

[Egon normally isn't all that social but he likes the sound of this girl's voice and decides to be awkwardly friendly on a whim.]

I didn't get your name.

((Okay, these two must be friends. JEW POWERS, UNITE!))

Dude, I've been here since, like... December? And now it's Rosh Hashanah already. Fuck. It's weird.

[he's not furry enough to be a Zoo Jew but Annie collects socially-awkward nerds] The name's Annie Goldstein. Yours?

That bodes well. I already feel myself slipping into insanity as it is. At least time isn't crawling.

Dr. Egon Spengler. I'm originally from New York City. Admittedly, it's nice to hear from someone who appears to be from my plane.

I know a few - I learned to pair tzimmes with brisket, since I learned it in San Antonio, and would apple honey cake be all right?

[Egon is VERY okay with that. Of course, he expresses this less than eloquently.]

I'll be there in fifteen minutes.

It'll take longer than that, hon!

Oh, a holiday! What kind of holiday is it?

Reply

drspengler September 29 2011, 03:35:32 UTC
It's the Jewish new year. Rosh Hashanah starts at sundown ten days before Yom Kippur.

I see. Happy new year then! Though I've never heard of Yom Kippur either, I think...

So do you stay up till midnight and count down and all that?

Actually, according to the Jewish calender, sundown marks the beginning of a new day. That's why Rosh Hashanah is celebrated at sundown.

There's usually a lot prayer. It's a much more religious holiday than the typical champagne-and-confetti new year's celebration.

[Egon has a sudden flash of deja vu.]

Uh... It's the Jewish new year. Rosh Hashanah starts at sundown ten days before Yom Kippur.

Oh.

... What is Jewish? And what is Yom Kippur?

[A rather cheerful and young sounding voice comes over the phone to ask a simple question.]

What's a Rash Hashanana?

[Amused tone.]

Rosh Hashanah is the celebration of the Jewish new year. It's a holidy for some people where I'm from.

Oh, okay!

Um...what's a Jewish?

drspengler September 30 2011, 17:52:22 UTC
[Slightly more amused but also a little exasperated.]

...

Jewish refers to a religion where I'm from. Jewish people also tend to share a cultural heritage and gene pool.
