Haha! I'll reiterate (for the umpteenth time) that as a JET, I can testify to the fact that just because you make it into JET doesn't mean you're of a higher caliber than anyone else. And sure, JET jobs tend to be pretty comfy, and while I know some people getting screwed over by being grossly underpaid, I know other people that are independently contracted and living quite comfortably.
IMO, the JET selection process is ridiculous. The way they choose people makes absolutely so sense to me. The main difference between JET ALTs and other English teaching jobs is the paycheck.
Just wondering, but didn't you imply sometime last year that taking an English teaching job in Japan was "settling" and only lazy/dumb people did it? I remember because it hurt my feelings, and I thought that maybe it was because you didn't know yet how hard getting a non-teaching job here is.
And Japanese ability, apparently. They like keeping that gaijin stereotype strong, I think.
Did I? If I did, I was being pretty dumb, since I was applying for the CIR position, which more often than not winds up being English-teaching with a lot of office-sitting on the side. I certainly apologize for anything I may have said, because looking back, I don't know why the hell I would have said it. By no means do I want to spend my life teaching English, but it is certainly a valid and legitimate way to get your foot in the door.
