Opposing thumb, dorsal fin

Made our first visit to Massachusetts as non-residents over the weekend for the Head of the Charles, my fourth(?) experience of the annual event. The rowing, though, is becoming more of a sideshow to the tents and music stage. The weather was idyllic, much like today's ( Read more... )

The main aim, aside from having the most simultaneously-lit pumpkins ever, was to put one over on New Hampshire, the previous record holders. Crazy crowds, the most people I've seen in Boston. (I'm sure there were more during the World Series celebrations of 2004, but I didn't venture downtown.) Half of us gave up trying to penetrate the throng any more than we already had.

Probably more in my head than actuality. Massachusetts moves to New Hampshire come the end of the work day, so it's hard to have a rivalry with oneself.

I think each of the six New England states has something unique going for it, but I'd need to spend more time in Connecticut and Rhode Island before I whittle those things off.
