I saw this on Ask Yahoo today, and added it to the WTF moments this week...

How much am I supposed to spend on a wedding gift?

Yeah that's bizarre. Though I agree with buying stuff on people's wedding registry. Giving a price range is just silly though. What are they going to do demand a receipt?

well, you're weird, but for different reasons. you're not wrong.

and the general rule of thumb i was told is, the gift should average about what you think your dinner and your "and one's" dinner are costing the couple.
as in, if it's $50 a head and you came alone, the gift should run about $50. if you brought a guest, $100.
and because i'm always broke, travel expenses should be taken into account on a case by case basis.

i go to waaaaaaaaay too many formal gift-giving affairs.
