Also, I was gypsy for Halloween in first grade, I think. I sang and played the tambourine and got tons and tons of candy and money that year. Only till much later did I realize how terrible it was to actually go as a gypsy. Thanks, Mom and Dad!
Gypsies are by nature (culturally speaking) nomadic, and they're stereotyped as untrustworthy because they are outsiders. They represent a forbidden lifestyle that people in mainstream society secretly crave, but would never allow themselves to experience, due to the inherent instability that such actions would bring. Now, I'm sure there are some bad gypsies who are criminals of some stripe and have taken to the road in an effort to escape whatever punishment they deserve, but this by no means should be attributed to gypsies in general.
I know so much about gypsies because that girl I was living with a few years ago really wanted to become one.
