The Golden Hinde II: Exterior

As many of you know, I recently went to England. While I was in London, I had the opportunity to board the Golden Hinde II! I took lots of photos, so be prepared for a picspam...

Drake's ship started out the circumnavigation as the Pelican, so when did it get the Golden Hinde figurehead and mural? Was it after they returned to England, or did Drake decide 'oh, hey, let me make Hatton forget about Doughty by putting his crest, etc. on the ship' while they were en route?

Hmmm...

Lovely photos! The recreated ship is amazing- and the record of all the adventures she's had is very gratifying to the dreamers who re-created her.

Thanks for sharing!

I thought the same thing about the figurehead. It's elaborate and beautiful - so where did they get the gilt for the paint?

One possibility that occurred to me is that they did it when they stopped to hide the treasures in France. I suppose that the people who reconstructed the ship had access to certain records - I wonder what they were?

That was an interesting article. It's quite incredible how he has worked at maintaining the Hinde his whole life.
