An Idiot’s Guide to Ending Global Poverty

Aug 11, 2005 09:28

How a concerted effort can make poverty a thing of the pastI’m often critical of our government’s penchant for dishonesty and exaggeration, but I must say that after hearing some recent news, I’m profusely thankful for what honesty we do receive. For several weeks now, a famine in the African country of Niger and surrounding areas has been ( Read more... )

I hope your not illusioned enough that you think it takes those 3 steps to "save" Africa or whatever it is you think. It's not as clear cut as that. The African landscape has very little potential for farming, and I'd estimate about 75% is unindustrialized. Mining in the African continent has already been exploited to the max. It even has an area, the name escapes me, that is massed with huge amounts of all sorts of metals. However, unlike other countries, these minerals are extremely close to the surface. Unfortunately, Africa only exports some 8% of the world's major metals like lead, copper, zinc. If Africa could attain a better share of the market and then expand it's oil industries such as in Nigeria, then you could have real potential, although they still need help in exploring these regions and developing the necessary technologies ( ... )
