I fooled the crowd...

Summertime now stenches of defective air conditioning units, black frozen bananas, and newsprint.

Coincedentally, during my first week of work at The Gazette, I've had to write my stories in the editor-in-chief's corner office. He's on vacation, and no other computers are available. Thankfully for the rest of the staff, I have not experienced any ( Read more... )

That's a great post! :) Did you click "E-mail this article" or "Print this story"? C'mon, you know you did. What's the editor's mistake?

Neither! I plan to take a couple of the papers home, silly. Read the article carefully. The mistake sorta has to do with a person's name. (P.S. Read the P.S. up there... I wasn't expecting anyone to read this right away, haha.)

Ah, I found it. Yes, I'm a plant whore but this reminds me of something I learned this year.. Once you introduce the name of a plant in a paper (ie: Cannibis sativa), you can abbreviate the genus after every other mention of the plant (C. sativa). If you talk about another plant that has a genus that starts with the same letter you have to indicate the new species with the complete binomial nomenclature form. All in italics of course. :) Any other way is just plant blasphemy.

I never knew there was such a thing as plant blasphemy. I don't even have to visit Wikipedia today to learn something new. Thanks!

Good job on the article! However, I am a grammar whore and things bothered me. Haha. (I don't think I found the error though.)

will be staying in the Frederick County 4-H Camp Center in Frederick from Monday and Tuesday --Should that be for Monday and Tuesday or from Monday to Tuesday?

Eastern National 4-H Forest Roundup in Louisville, Ky. --Why isn't KY capitalized? I know there's a period at the end, but it's signifying the end of the sentence, not the abbreviation.

‘‘It is a very big deal,” Kneer said, --This was said before Kneer was introduced to the article, so people don't know who that is.

I apologize for being picky, and I know it's not your fault. You just write the papers. You don't have to proofread them. So, uh...get better copy editors in there at the Gazette. (Of course, it is Frederick, so no one else cares about stupid mistakes.) :)

1. Gah, it should be from Monday to Tuesday. That was my fault.
2. Kentucky (KY) is not capitalized because we go by The Associated Press Stylebook standards. These designated abbreviations are to be used in any mention of the state. Examples include: Ala., Ariz., W. Va., Md. and Wyo.The capitalized form is to be used for a full mailing address only.
3. You found the mistake! They had moved quotes around at the very last minute and forgot to change other things.

Haha, if I was in charge of the hiring process, I'd still have to keep the copy editor. She's my editor too, haha.

I saw it in the "real" gazette!!! But basically um, it was raining this morning, I started running towards the gazebo, and then realized my car windows were down, so then I put those up, and then I was soaked and didn't want to run anymore...

TOMORROW...I swear!

Well, you certainly ran your quota this week... just read your away message. Damn.

And I didn't think that people read The "real" Gazette. That's awesome that you saw the article in there.

One of the women in charge of the paper's real estate guide sits right across from the corner office. Yesterday at lunch she asked if I'm working on some big project, since I look so absorbed all of the time. I guess reading about Johnny Marr can do that to me.

So I heard about postcards, heh.

I usually go at 12:30 p.m. I'm already excited. Where do you usually go? I haven't been around downtown because so far I've just eaten in the office's kitchen, haha.
