Well, hmm, what's the AC compressor doing? does it make noise all the time? I just overhauled the clutch bearing on my Saturn as it was howling so loud you couldn't use a drive-up window. Shop's suggestion was replace a $400 compressor and clutch. I did manage to figure out how to take the clutch apart, get a bearing number, order it from a bearing shop ($75) and press it back in.

Unfortunately you're way over there, but there might be some well equipped motorfurs out your way that could help save the bucks. Else you could save aside maybe 50 a month or so and get it fixed when you can. Cars always consume parts but a civic's running cost should be pretty low. $50 a month every month would likely cover most things.

Unfortunately, all the motofurs in the Chicago area seem to be bike-oriented, so none of them have any of the things I'd need to get the compressor out and back in again (it's at the bottom of the engine, in the worst possible place heh).
