Earth's Daughter,

'Tis a shame that you weren't moved by the LOTR Musical more...I would have gone to this too, but for the fact that I have been on holiday in Slovenia and the Czech republic...hey-ho, another time maybe !!

As for the V & A Exhibition...

"Dali apparently said that he could not see the difference between a lobster and a telephone, adding that whenever he went into a restaurant and ordered lobster he was amazed that they did not serve him cooked telephone"

That's because he was as nutty as a fruit-cake - absolutely mad as a hatter - but we wouldn't have had him any other way !!

I went to this exhibition a few weeks ago myself, and absolutely loved it !! I particularly loved the beautiful Corset chair, by Leonore Fini, and the birdleg table...
Here is my own report,in case you missed:-

The corset chair was Stewart's favourite. Designed for looks rather than comfort. But so were corsets.

I had missed your very well illustrated report. It was only because Pearl had mentioned it that I knew the exhibition was on at all.

That's a shame about the languages though at the same time it may help the young ones understand the story better. But I'm glad to hear you still were able to mostly enjoy the musical despite that. I hope someday I'll get a chance to see the musical.

From the point of view of clarity it would have been better to streamline the story even more. I am glad I went, but also glad that I did not fork out for an expensive seat. I hope it is successful in London because only then will it travel to the rest of the world.

Indeed. I've been wondering if it will come to NYC.

Great report....and so nice to see you back at LJ.

Thanks for the report. Sorry that the LOTR musical was not all you hoped, but at least it had some good features. I'd like to see it someday for the spectacle and because I love musicals and LOTR, so I'm curious to see the combination. I just wish it sounded like it was done better than it is. . .

I think part of my problem is that I am not over-fond of musicals, though I have enjoyed "Joseph" and "Cats", both of which have exceptionally good music. I said nothing about the LOTR music because there is really nothing to say; it was neither good nor bad, just unmemorable. The lack of depth would have mattered less if the music had been better.

I wrote a limerick about this that I am getting ready to post. I hope you don't mind. I won't link this entry unless I hear back from you saying that is OK.

I must not, MUST NOT, miss that Surrealism exhibition!

It wasn't you that had mentioned it then? In that case I am failing to give someone else the credit that is their due.

I am sorry to hear that the musical was only OK:( But to be honest after all the bad critics it got, I am surprised that you could still find some good stuff in it...I would love to see it but I already know that I won't make it to London this year(have already been there in April and my budget doesn't allow two trips to London a year),so I have no hopes of ever seeing it, which makes me actually a bit sad, as bad as it may be, I'd love to see this interpretation of my favourite story nonetheless...

It has had some good reviews in London with both The Times and The Guardian awarding it 4 stars (out of 5), but also, as you say, some appalling ones. I agree with many of the points made by both ends of the spectrum. It's a matter of how much weight one personally gives to the good and bad points.
However, I think that even the most enthusiastic critic would agree that the films do not suffer by comparison.
