Visit to Stockholm

Aug 31, 2007 11:47

Perversely, last weekend we left some of the best weather this summer has known for the distinctly cooler, Nordic climate of Stockholm. For my husband this was partly a business trip but for me, entirely pleasure.

Stockholm is a beautiful city, built on an archipelago, so the sea is everywhere.

Thanks for looking. I have to confess that I am quite pleased with them, especially the one looking out from under the arches. I took another of the same view, but without the arches, and though it is a better view of Stockholm it is not nearly as good as a photograph.

What fantastic photos! I am so happy you got to go, but wish I could have seen all this too. I've been to Norway, but not Sweden. And I'm a big Ingmar Bergman fan, too!

Thank you. Stockholm is an expensive city so I was very fortunate to only have to pay for one night's accomodation out of the three.

It is often the way. We go on holiday to beautiful places but would not want to live there. Usually beauty equates to low population density and most of us depend as least partially on other people for our entertainment and stimulation.

What a gorgeous place! The ship is beautiful. Seems really weird that those gunports were so low, doesn't it?

I suppose they fitted in as many gunports as they had space for. They would not necessarily have to open them all during a battle but in a calm sea there would be an obvious advantage in doing so. I seem to remember reading that the cannons could only be fired once every 12 minutes or so, otherwise they became too hot and would explode.

Fabulous pics - thanks so much for sharing!!

I have always wanted to visit Sweden - my mother's side of the family is Swedish - my grandfather came to the US from Sweden when he was 17. And these pics make me want to go even more.

The condition of that ship is just amazing for being at the bottom of the ocean that long - I can see why it would be a highlight to see that. So much detailed carving - incredible.

Thank you. The ship is indeed in extraordinarily good condition; there are very few new planks in her. Apparently the bacterium that causes wood decay does not live in the Baltic, it is not sufficientlt saline.
