It's not that I've been all that busy, it's that I've been too lazy to post recently. This quarter so far has been as nice as predicted. Among other fun things ( Read more... )

Isn't Revolutionary Road the best?!?!?! I read it this fall, waiting for the movie to come out and zipped through it, couldn't put it down. I'm also surprised I wasn't assigned this in college or hs. It's such a fast read but there's so much there. And every character is just perfectly drawn, down to the dog Mrs. Givings buys after she more or less gives up on her son...

I was a little disappointed in the movie- I thought it had the potential to be amazing if they just embraced the ugliness in the characters. (I don't like Leonardo DiCaprio all that much usually but him as Frank is perfection. Kate Winslet, too- I guess both the characters are actors at heart, which makes casting movie stars an easy proposition.)

I love how you see their perceptions of the people they know change as their selfish interests shift, through the language more than any particular thing they say. Mrs. Givings' son in particular. Like you said, perfectly drawn.

Too bad about the movie being disappointing. I haven't seen it yet.

The movie wasn't awful- I probably would have liked it a lot more if I hadn't read the book. There are some really good performances, especially by the John Givings actor. In the book, you can almost forget how crazy he is, but the actor doesn't let you forget in the movie.

It's the same Hollywood thing, smoothing out the rough edges that made you like the book in the first place. In the book, it's made clear that Frank really wanted April to abort their first kid, and only convinced her to keep it because his masculine pride was wounded. In the movie, he's just shocked, SHOCKED!, that she would even think of such a thing, her own baby, how could she be so unnatural, etc etc.
