In Hawaii? One of the reasons I couldn't wait to move back was because I wasn't a clubber, street racer or single mom, like most of the people my age out there.
Then again, I was in Hilo, so maybe you'll have better luck. I couldn't meet anyone I considered my type of friend there.
I'm not social enough to actively go out and find new friends, but when I'm forced to be around people at both work and school, I can make some pretty good friends.
Getting involved in something local that you're interested in helps, at least you know there's one thing you have in common. But I found a friend online on a forum who at the time lived in Texas and ended up moving near Norman for work. Now we hang out all the time. So you never know. :)
Having an interest in common helps a great deal. Pick something you're good at, or would like to be good at, and find a local group to join or hang with. Your artwork of course comes to mind, but a sports activity works as well. After that it's luck....some groups go out of their way to make newcomers feel welcome, some do not. Try to engage your neighbours, as well. They're always around; and if you can make them friends as well, all the better. ;)

Nothing past acquaintance level yet though.

I don't think I've made a single one, sure there are people I talk to, but I wouldn't consider them "friends".
Good luck :
