Dead to the world?

The UK singles chart used to mean something, having a number one was THE benchmark, that was the goal...along with appearing on Top of the Pops.  At least when I was 16 and dreamt of such things.

I heard Umbrella for the first time yesterday.  It's been at number one for 9 weeks apparently.  I didn't know ( Read more... )

Well that's it! There haven't even been adverts for the ringtone on TV. I've not heard it in the shops, seen it on TV, nothing. I saw it on MTV earlier for the first time and I do watch the music channels every so often.

I don't know...it's ok, a reasonably palatable slice of pop music but not what one might term a future classic. I wonder if it's success has anything to do with the incessant rain?

The chart just doesn't mean as much these days I guess, there's no dedicated chart music shows on tv anymore (or if there are I've missed them). And certainly in my case, its down to apathy. The majority of mainstream chart music leaves me cold, so I don't pay as much attention to it as I used to.......

I can't say i could name one band in the UK charts right now. Pretty sure I could name most in the DAC though. Dunno. I listen to radio 5, buy music off itunes that I've heard in clubs and occasionally pick up on videos but very very rarely.

You can buy your way into the charts these days; it has nothing whatsoever to do with radio play or singles sales. I knew Umbrella was at No.1 but only because I heard someone complaining about how shit it is; I've not heard the song itself.

You always could buy yourself into the charts. Though it does have a lot to do with radio play/singles sales as they are how the chart is compiled.
