Define "respond." The woman has not had cognitive function for 15 years, only brain stem responses (breathing, heart beat, muscular movement, etc). Her "gazing up" at her mother was probably just a well positioned camera and bodies.
Hmm, that article is interesting for me. But it is tempered by the fact that I personally know a disability rights activist, and that the slippery slope is well, slippery. My friend was born with hydrocephalus and the doctors advised the parents to withold food and water, because he would never have a good life. As an adult he's definitely short, but other than that he's a basically normal human being. I think a lot of the geriatric issues *should* be separate from straight disability issues of younger people, but unfortunately they are inextricably linked.
Having said that, I think the Shiavo circus is rediculous and doing more harm than good as far as being the "test case" for these issues.
