In a "statement of research" essay for a grad school, fellowship, etc. application, is it appropriate to have a short lit cited? For example: "we are becoming more aware that x is important in understanding y (Doe et al. 2010), so I will include an examination of x in my research on y and z" or "collaborators and I have used new technologies in ( Read more... )

yes, it is...I did so when I applied for an internal fellowship. Check and see if works cited is counted in the page limit (it wasn't for mine, if it had, I would've had to cut citations cause I had over a page and the research statement was only two pages...)

I think it is permissible. I would check with the fellowship rules, just to get whatever formatting correct.
