[The comm clicks on, and a male voice, tenor, with an accent that may sound vaguely British to some, Aeropan to others, speaks thoughtfully.]Surnames are not common in my world. Even when someone has a second name, they usually prefer to go by their first. Obviously, this is not my world, and most of you are not from it, either. Common sense ( Read more... )

If you're uncertain or its a more formal setting, people usually use the last name. If you're more familar with them, use the first name.

Ah, that seems a simple enough rule to follow. I do wonder, though - is it the same if there is a third name involved?

[Because he has now met someone with a third name. Yes, three names. Amazing.]

Where I'm from some people have middle names, but they usually don't use them much. I'd go with the first or the last still.
Or you could always just ask them.

Yes, I'll probably go with that option as often as not. Still, it is always useful to know basic etiquette.

Hmm.

[He rubs his chin as he considers all this.]

First names are generally what we are called, surnames typically denote the family, but if you don't mind indulging my curiosity, what is the purpose of a middle name? Is it a nickname, or something else?

Use the surname with the appropriate honorific unless you've been invited to use the given name.

Must it always be an invitation?

[He's not being facetious. He's honestly curious.]

It's extremely rude otherwise.

[Her Japanese enculturation, let her show you it.]

The exception is children.

Hmm. That has not been my intention. I'll have to keep that in mind.

[She's going to convince him he's been Doing It Wrong the whole time he's been on the ship. Now everyone's going to have to deal with an overly formal Phoenix. Thank you, Major Kusanagi.

He lifts an eyebrow at her other comment.]

In what way are children excepted?

Where I am from, most people address one another by their surname's. They are addressed as "Frau" for a woman or "Herr" for a man.

[Which is something mun failed at keeping up with, oops]

Frau and Herr... I take it those are equivalent to miss and mister?

They are, ja.

What is it you want to know about him?

At this point, I know only his name, though the fact that he was able to defeat a woman I know in combat would indicate that he's dangerous as well. I would like to know what abilities he possesses, strengths, weaknesses, as well as what sort of personality he has. Anything you know about him, really.

Hmn.

He has a temper. Worse than mine, seems like. Hates being called "Ganny", but I doubt that helps you.

He is... well-constructed, big, like a warrior. Confident, assured of himself. I have yet to face him in combat, but his movements suggested he is capable of holding his own well enough.

[Actually, it is useful to know potential ways to rile the man up.]

If I wanted to pick him out in a crowd, what would I look for? What significant features does he have?

...I'm dreadng asking this, but why do you want to know about him? Is it about - whatever he did last week?

I am his former second-in-command. Nabooru.

Former second-in-command?

[Yes, he's ignoring those first questions for the moment. If this Nabooru still holds any loyalties toward the man, he's not about to tell her his true intentions.]

He waged war on the neighboring kingdom and nearly sent our people to their demise. Yes, former.

[Ahh. That would be the sound of a woman who most definitely was not on Ganondorf's side.]

Then you hold no love for him and would not object to someone taking him to task? Because in answer to your question, yes, this has everything to do with last week.
