13th Frontier [audio // common]

[The comm clicks on, and a male voice, tenor, with an accent that may sound vaguely British to some, Aeropan to others, speaks thoughtfully.]Surnames are not common in my world. Even when someone has a second name, they usually prefer to go by their first. Obviously, this is not my world, and most of you are not from it, either. Common sense ( Read more... )

[Phoenix grimaces. He hasn't spoken to Jak since those hallucinations, has honestly been avoiding the young man. He probably ought to say something about that, but...

"Oh, that's right, I'm not a Dark Warrior after all. That whole display in your room? Completely unnecessary."

...right. He'll avoid that subject for just a little longer.

But Jak seems to know something, and he wants to know as much as he can before he takes Ganondorf on. His voice is still a little flat, though.]

I'd gathered as much.

Tell me, Jak, how do you feel about Ashelin?

[Change of subject? Or not?]

[Yeah, he still hates you, Phoenix.]

That's none of your business.

[So nice to know the feeling is mutual. All is right with the world.]

Would you care if she died?

[Naveen gives a chuckle before answering.]

I was taught differently, but I am of the opinion if a person introduces themselves to you with their full name, you use their last name until they correct you. If they say their first name, eh, you use their first name. An example-- I tell people to call me Naveen, as my name is far too long.

[He is ignoring the fact that he has not introduced himself yet and does not know this person.]

My tutor, however, would not have liked that. But! But, it is all a difference of culture, I think. Maldonians can be a little...

[He doesn't know the word he wants to use and it trips him up for a second.]

Old-minded, you know.

Ah, yes. I think I can empathize with your experience there. I've known a good many people, my parents among them, who placed more importance on old values and ideals than I would have preferred.

So, you are Naveen, then? My name is Phoenix.

...how long is your name?

[You have him curious. How long could his name possibly be?]

My name, it is not so important. It is a lot of titles, mostly, with lots of family names-- father's of father's names. My name is just Naveen. No one else in my family has this name. With royalty, everyone is named after everyone else, it is very tedious.

[It almost sounds as though he really doesn't want to list off all of the titles.]

Phoenix, yes? It is good to talk to you.

Hmm. The royal family of my home also had a tradition with names, though it was somewhat different than that. More of a theme to the names than a collection of who their ancestors were. Names did get reused from time to time, though they tried to avoid using the same one two generations in a row.

The pleasure is all mine, I assure you.

Surnames huh? I don't pr-- [Whoops, almost slipped up there.]

I just go by my first name. So we're not that different there...

Keats. Nothin' hard to remember there.

What about you?

Phoenix - likewise, not that difficult.

But surnames are common in your world?

Yes, considering his actions, he's made that quite obvious.

The question is, if one wanted to confront him on this, what would be the best course of action?

Indeed the winning question, isn't it?

Confronting that man head on won't do anything except result in personal harm. You're better off taking a roundabout route.

[And Sheik knows all about roundabout routes.]

[Phoenix lifts an eybrow.]

You have a suggestion?

[He's all ears, Sheik - no pun intended.]

We tend to go by given names where I'm from, with women getting a "Miss" added to it until you grow more familiar. It was awkward for a while hearing people call me "Whitecastle".

That sounds a good deal more like how my world operates.

[He tilts his head.]

Since "Whitecastle" is the half of your name that you don't prefer, might I know the other half?

Ah, we have spoken before - upon my arrival to this ship, I believe. My apologies, I did not immediately recognize your voice.

Are things going well with that bar of yours?
