How is Borat an adapted screenplay? No, really, I'm asking.

Not that I begrudge a Cate Blanchett movie anything, but why is Babel suddenly winning and getting nominated for stuff? All the critics hated it...? Did Crash set some kind of trend?

Big movies that never came to our theater: Babel, The Departed, Letters from Iwo Jima, The Queen, ( Read more... )

For that matter, a lot of those movies didn't come to my town either, despite the fact we have a 20 theatre cineplex and the AFI Silver theatre.

If you have the AFI you also have Landmark in Bethesda and E Street, which, combined with the AFI and The Majestic, has played all those movies.

I'm blanking on the Landmark - really, I don't go out of Silver Spring much. Bethesda is a blank area on Brighty!Maps, hehe, as is most of DC.

Well, the Landmark in Bethesda is not that Metro accessible. The one in DC is, though, ridiculously so (off the red line, even), and they show more of the obscure films.

Borat is "adapted" from the character which was originally on Da Ali G Show. So while it's not like a novel or play adaptation, it is based on something that was previously produced. The same principle would apply if - by some wildly unlikely turn of events - The Ladies Man's screenplay, based on Tim Meadows' SNL sketch, had been nominated for an Oscar.

Not all the critics hated Babel, but it's one of those movies that I think people say they think is brilliant and moving because they think they're supposed to. I didn't like it nearly as well as Crash (I didn't like it at all, really), and I think the reaction to it is a reflex from people being so ticked off that Crash won Best Picture last year (i.e., here's a *real* "message movie" to give awards to).

Hmph, indeed. I'm still boggling over the Dreamgirls snub.

Apparently the character Bruno will adapted into a movie now.

IMO the OSCAR nominations are this year a joke. But then again a lot of the movies last year really weren't that strong and well done how I would like to see a movie done in the first place.

I didn't watch Babel, VOlver or Pan's labyrinth, but those aired here. I watched The Departed, Children of Men and the Illusionist - the first two are great, the last I liked but it wasn't as great as the others.

You DO know there is a way you can watch all this, right? If they don't come to you...you go after them! ;)

None of those movies came here either (besides Marie Antoinette). I was really wanting to see The Last King of Scotland and Pan's Labyrinth. Children of Men looked good too.
