Thanks to Netflix instant-play and videos on NBC.com, I have watched (and rewatched) every episode, and I am obsessed. The funny. The Dwight. The Jim and Pam OMGWTFBBQ.
Well, Netflix instant-play has the BBC series, and I watched part of the first episode. But I didn't like or connect with any of the characters. :-/ I'll probably try again to watch it, though, because I know it's supposed to be great.
So I watched series 1 & 2 on Netflix (that's all they have). It was funny - my favorite thing about it is Gareth Keenan - but I don't understand why it's supposed to be soooo much better than the American version. David Brent annoys the hell out of me. Michael Scott is an idiot, but I can't help liking him. David Brent just makes me go ARGGGG. I really liked Tim, and he is possibly the only character on the British version that I like. Dawn is very lifeless and dull. She has none of Pam's sparkle.
I guess I prefer the American version because the characters engage me. I'm not just sitting there laughing at them or cringing at what they say. Most of the time I'm laughing with them, not at them.
The British version... eh, I don't feel very compelled to watch more of it. Does this make me an ignorant Yank? ;D
(incidentally, I never thought I'd say that I liked something American more than something British!)
Both versions are funny, but they're a bit different, and I wouldn't say either one is superior to the other. I prefer the UK series myself - its humour is sharper, drier, and very British, and being an Aussie, I can relate to that better.
Same as you, I love Tim, I hate Dawn (she was the weak point of the series I feel). Gareth is gold. I also get really annoyed by Ricky Gervais, but I guess that's the whole point of his character - you're supposed to hate him (unlike Steve Carell who was actually rather likeable).
I think what you said about how likeable the characters are is very true - in the UK version, I think they deliberately made most of the characters obnoxious, because Brits find that sort of stuff funny, even if they are cringing while they are laughing :)
