[First Picture:
Beachcomber]
With all of the traveling we had done so far, we decided to stay at "home" on Wednesday. Around mid-morning we went for a walk down the main drag of Rockaway Beach. Some stores were closed for the winter, but a few were open. We started out at a little café where we ate a snack. It was a cute little place with a bunch of neat pictures on the walls taken by locals. Afterwards we continued up the street. We were quite amused by the family of cats that were hanging out in front of a seafood place. Most of them seemed young and quite shy, but well taken care of. We did not end up doing much shopping, but did enjoy the walk.
As we were walking back towards the condo, we saw one of the little cats walk out into the middle of the highway and stop. We noticed that he was staring at a bunch of seagulls being fed across the street. Then we noticed a car coming down the road as well as a big logging truck from the opposite direction. The car got closer and closer, but the cat did not seem to notice. The car did not slow down either. We both watched with dread, unable to look away. Then at the last second we saw the cat dart back across the street towards his home. Stupid cat.
Near the condo, we headed onto the beach. I went back to drop off Jaime's purse and to pick up the binoculars. Then we did some beach combing. We walked south for about a mile, almost in line with the Twin Rocks before turning around. The weather was a bit cooler than the previous day, but quite pleasant. We saw half a dozen other people along our way with probably an equal number of dogs. It was a very nice time.
After our walk we hung out at the condo for a while before going to dinner. We went to Mazatlan, a chain of Mexican restaurants. The food was good. We felt a little guilty going to a chain of restaurants while staying in areas with some of the best seafood, but there was plenty of time for that later. We ended the day at the condo enjoying our "free" bottle of Gewurtztraminer from the Nehalem winery. Although the condo was stocked with most kitchen flatware, glasses, etc. there were no wine glasses. So we drank our $25 bottle of wine in a coffee mug and a highball glass. It was klassy, with a "k".
