I conquered my fear of the blank canvas today! I started the portrait of the girlfriend that I preped for about 2 weeks ago. Before I started I had another look at the sketches I'd done, and made an executive decision to very loosely follow it. The problem I thought I'd have, if I'd stuck to what I planned, was that the piece would look ( Read more... )

Wow that painting if big. This picture did not start out the way I thought at all....its nice to see how you work. Also, I can see the simplification of the 'perspective' in Iconoclastic work, esp in the 3rd and 4th photo.

You're eyes are still drawn to the face...its obviously been positioned a bit off-center....but I think you've preserved the effect. The confident brush strokes help.

Ok yeah, I probably should have said something about that. When I was younger some art historian told me that in a lot of classical portraits the face is slightly off center so that the point where the eye meets the nose is in the center. I wish i could remember the explaination as to why. Because I'd been using icons and classical portarits as inspiration I wanted to maintain that kind of "art rule".

It is pretty big too (1 x 1.2 meters) I'd forgotten how awkward canvases that size are! lol

Thanks honey x
