Great stuff Erin. I've been trying to be more green myself lately. We recycle all of our food waste and paper so we try to only have one black bin bag every two weeks which seems to be working well. I was thinking of getting some of those energy saving bulbs - not least because electricity has shot up 30%! Do you have any other recommendations? (sadly we don't have a garden!)
Well, it's all about your frame of mind. Anna and I have had a major shift in our frame of mind. First it was all about habits; eliminate the places where we habitually do this or that. For instance, we leave all of our appliances plugged in, even when they're not in use. Of course, this means we have to bend over or reach behind something to plug it in now before we use it, but I think if you go around your house and look for all the things you have plugged in, you'll be amazed at what you'll find (I wager you've got more than a dozen appliances plugged in, and half of them you use maybe once a week

Hee, buying from a 250 mile range made me giggle. Distance is so relative! Shopping locally and independently where possible is important to me. Sometimes chains are unavoidable but even then, making an effort to support the ones that are further along the green/ethical line is always best, if possible.
But like you said, there is no sense in beating yourself up for the compromises you end up making. All you can do is all you can do!
Anyway, I am so impressed with your gardening! It sounds like you'll be reaping the rewards of all of that later, and I love that being a gardener is another excuse to enjoy rain. Hope that work sorts itself out soon and that the trip to Ohio goes ok!
Why do you scoff at our '250 mile range' policy? Is it because the US is so much bigger than the UK and our food has to travel longer to get to our table than it does yours? Most of the food on our grocer's shelves comes from beyond the US- China, India, South America. We try to keep food consumption from growers within 250 miles so we eat less processed foods and more whole foods (ideally). (Not trying to be smart about it, just wanted to clarify.)
And thanks for the encouragement! I don't know how well our gardening will turn out. Fortunately, we're not in a position right now where we have to be self-sustaining, so we consider all of this practise for when we move to the garm.
If you talk to HR (I'm pretty sure) they Legally have to tell you what the allegations are. I think you should look for a better job though so maybe this is a sign??? You don't have to totally sell out. You could work for a corporation you respect or that offers/sells a product you believe in. I would imagine that in NYC this is easier to do than in most other places. You have warehouse management experience, maybe you could find something in organic food warehousing/distribution. I could totally see you wearing steel-towed boots and flannel to work!
Yeah, work is... it was my New Year's Resolution to get a new job. I'm all ready to sell out and do some mindless bookkeeping somewhere- anywhere I don't have to answer to customers. I can deal with obnoxious staff members and bosses, but customers- I just don't know that I want to deal anymore.
We'll see- if this thing blows over, I'm in line for the promotion- it just has to get the paperwork filled out in HR. If this thing doesn't blow over, then it's fine with me- I'll look for work elsewhere. I'm really not committed to my current organisation anymore.
