Nice pics. I'm jealous, as I'd really like to see some of the Teutonic castles at some point.

It was a lovely surprise to end up in one. Stealth Teutonic castle experience ftw. (As their prisoners didn't say.)

I've kept the little guide book which has good layouts and descriptions. It could be a handy sourcebook and you're welcome to it - will try to remember to bring it with me next time we are co-located.

And thank you. I'm having a nice mix of relaxing and getting things done. What are you guys up to?

Well your imagination is about as filthy as mine, then.

As to their real purpose, I guess they were some sort of counterweight to help with opening the heavy metal gate or the drawbridge?

My bear book is still on my desk at home, frail but intact. A holy relic of an ancient polar bear cult.

Love lovingly received by both of us and loved right back at you xx

I am plumping for counterweight for the undoubtedly massive metal-reinforced slabs of timber they would have been using for gates. Your post has been most eductional, I feel teutored. I wonder how the history of Europe would have been altered if they had in fact been a crusading force of teachers - Oxbridge SAS rather than Goldman Sachs.
