What the Frak?

I can't believe my rotten luck.  The one Walter Scott novel I want to read today is the only one of his 40+ novels that isn't available full-text online.  Frak.  The Pirate was well-received--it's better than a lot of his other novels!  Maybe I can borrow my dad's library card and see if his university library owns it?  *goes to check*  Yep, they ( Read more... )

LOL of course faculty never borrow books, that would mean they would have to share!

I get to use my mad subterfuge skillz and go impersonate my dad!
Now that I would pay to see!

Yep, the subterfuge-disguise looked good on me. I nearly panicked when they asked me for my ID, but I played it cool. Turns out, they were just checking because their computers were down. Lucky me--got my book. ;D

OMG, I wish MY faculty were like yours! Buy their own copies?? Tchah!
Here, they just recall stuff off you. And then they assign their Honours course students the same topic as you're doing for your Masters, so that you get embroiled in a recall-war with a bunch of other people. Grrr.
Deep breaths Z, it's all in the past now!
*goes Zen*

The Pirate, eh? Arrr. *giggles* (You'll find out why soon enough).
And, yay subterfuge! :D

(((zaleti))) Those recall wars sound ugly, and are hopefully a thing of the past for you! I've had that happen to me maybe once, if ever, really. We're much more passive-aggressive over here. About once a month, I see book requests on our english-grad listserv. And it's always very politely phrased: "before I recall this book, does anyone have it? Let's share!" Actually, send a message is a lot nicer than just recalling it. It's just . . . a care bear message, with claws. I'm going to be sending out one of those emails in about two weeks. SWEET! :D OMGs, are you writing a fic with pirates in it? O. M. G. S. I might explode. "Tell me more, tell me more . . . Like does he have a car cutlass?" :D :D :D soooo exciting!!!!!!!!!!! Arg!

Use google booksearch. I found 3 full text versions of The Pirate by Walter Scott. In one version, one of the pages of the introduction didn't quite scan properly, but that's only the introduction.

See how you go.

But you've probably found a copy by now. ^_^
