Chapter 13

When Heechul turned away from the closed elevator doors the last thing he expected was to be face to face with the person who he unexpectedly saw as his rival: Lee Taemin. Heechul froze a bit before frowning.

“Yah, you have some nerve coming here when I told you to stay away from her,” Heechul growled.

“I had to return her phone. How do you suppose I should do that then?”

Taemin pulled Sulli’s cellphone from his pocket and Heechul took the few steps forward to snatch it from Taemin’s hand but he pulled his hand back.

“I’ll do it,” Heechul said.

“Why should I trust you to do that?”

“What?”

“You already broke her heart once. What more do you want?”

“Stop talking like you know everything. I’m still your hyung you know,” Heechul said.

“I know.”

Taemin noted the tired look on Heechul’s face and wondered what he should say next. The last thing he wanted to do was provoke him while there was still a misunderstanding between them, but he also felt a responsibility to Sulli to make sure Heechul’s intentions were good.

“And I didn’t break her heart. How could I break a heart that wasn’t for me in the first place? She was with you last night wasn’t she?”

“”As a matter of fact she was,” Taemin confirmed.

Heechul glowered.

“And she couldn’t do anything but stare at her phone the entire time. She barely listened to a thing I said. And you know why? It’s because she didn’t want you to misunderstand. She was worried about that the entire time.”

Heechul laughed, “Really? You expect me to believe that?”

“It’s the truth. If I were with her believe me I’d fight you tooth and nail for her because she’s amazing and smart and loyal. But the fact is I am not with her and she doesn’t like me. She likes you. I suppose she told you? But she didn’t have to say it right? Deep down you knew it all along, right?”

“Who are you to tell me what I believe or don’t believe?”

“Oh come on it’s obvious. Every single thing she did was her confession. If her words aren’t enough then let her actions speak to you.”

Heechul scoffed, “Taemin, there is so much about the world you don’t know. Words and action, who said they have to match up any more? People can just say whatever and do whatever.”

“Just because people can do it doesn’t mean they do!” Taemin said.

Heechul clenched his fist feeling all sorts of anger welling inside of his chest:anger at Taemin for concerning himself with things that weren’t, and at Hankyung for still fucking him over when he wasn’t even there and anger at Sulli for roping him into something he clearly wasn’t ready for. But really, most of all he was angry with himself. Words and actions, they didn’t have meaning right? Because he kissed her but he couldn’t tell her he if he liked her.

Even if she wouldn’t understand didn’t she deserve to be talked to like an adult? But Heechul wasn’t able to do that. He couldn’t trust himself to do the right thing. Even he at the age of 28 was in no position to handle to precarious situation he set up for himself. Yes, he and he alone. He was the adult. The burden was on his shoulders.

Heechul was startled out of his thoughts by Taemin pressing Sulli’s phone against his hands.

“Hyung…” Taemin said. “It feels like you have something to say… so say it.”

“There’s nothing-“

“Look, if you don’t like her you don’t like her if you like her you like her. But…” Taemin paused, wringing his fingers a bit around the phone.

Heechul sighed and took the phone from Taemin’s hands.

“Hyung… I won’t tell you what to say or what your decision should be but believe when I say she really truly likes you,” Taemin said.

Heechul’s fingers tightened around the phone and Taemin smiled softly as he pressed the elevator button for Heechul and the turning and walking away leaving Heechul’s fate in his own hands.

As Heechul stepped into the elevator he couldn’t help but somehow feel bamboozled by Taemin. What did they even talk about again? And wasn’t he supposed to be mad? And yet Heechul found that he couldn’t be. He was just tired.

As much as he hated to admit it the young boy was right. If Hankyung would only have talked, if only he shared his true feelings instead of just walking out the way he did maybe he’d be better off. But that didn’t mean Sulli deserved the same treatment. It also didn’t mean he should pile on the burden of his relationship with Hankyung on her shoulders either.

He had to set things right: whatever that meant.

“How’d it go?” Jungmo asked as Taemin approached after coming back from the building.

“Heechul was there,” Taemin said.

Jungmo looked surprised, “Is everything ok?”

Taemin merely smiled and said, “I think it will.”

Taemin couldn’t really say for sure if it would be but he handed over the phone because he felt something in Heechul’s body language, and read it in his eyes, that he never wanted to hurt Sulli even if he couldn’t say it. Taemin could only hope he was right.
