So hey, quick state of the nation: I'm living at home for the summer, working the museum beat with filing at the clinic filling my free time. Looking forward to an election for the first time in my life, even though I'm betting that nothing will change. I will a little upset if the first Canadian government to ever be held in contempt of Parliament ( Read more... )

There's a good Canadian Politics community on livejournal if you want more info. Obviously it's not a complete picture, but it could be helpful as a basic outline of pertinent issues ( ... )

if I chose another region, I'd miss my chance to not vote for the Canadian Action Party! Their only candidate in the province is here!

Here are those voting-related websites I was telling you about:

This one's for figuring out who's got the best chance against the conservatives in your riding and this one tells you which party best represents you.

P.S CAMPING TRIP THIS SUMMER OH MY GOSH

the CBC thing was of no use to me. My circle took up almost a whole quarter of the entire grid, and it just barely scraped the edges of the Liberals, the Bloc, and the NDP. bleeegh

Yeah, I've had a lot of people say that. I don't know if it's that useful, really.

Oh, hey! I was on Entanglement for a while. Robo-dolphin and the only other Inquestor character on the internet were really fun to play with.

I thought of you when I saw that there'd been an Inquestor character there! Sadly, I don't think they're still in the game.

Well, I played Elloran there for a while, but for whatever reason the game didn't 'click' with him. However, the mod probably still plays Sajit, Elloran's consort/musician. (The amount of emo in the three posts they had together was phenomenal. XD)

Haha, aw, I'm sad I missed you there! Although I'm not sure that Elloran and Tavros would have much to talk about, come to think of it. Tavros isn't exactly Mewtwo's mental equal by any stretch of the imagination.

"I can't shake the belief that any other party would be just as bad in their own way, so we need a minority government in order for them to balance each other out (and also fail to accomplish anything in a timely manner, but no change is better than negative changes as far as I'm concerned)."

I really like this statement - I find that both extremely strong NDP supporters and extremely strong Conservative supporters are incredibly annoying in that they continuously point out the faults in the the party while refusing to admit the faults with their own party. I agree with the concept of a minority government being more in check than a majority government, though the time and money spent on putting policies through is likely much more than in a majority situation (not saying that's bad, just saying).

It has been interesting for me because a lot of my friends are NDP and my dad is Conservative! So at home I hear about how bad the NDP are for health care and about how they're all hypocrites and blah blah blah, and with my friends I hear everything negative about Conservatives and blah blah blah.

The thing about a minority is that it's more likely to represent the wants of majority of the nation instead of just 30 or 40 percent. Although you're totally right, the additional time spent debating things does build up expense.

That's the thing - there's good things and bad things about all of the parties. In my opinion, each voter has to prioritize what's important to them and vote accordingly, and take the bad things along with it. Because there's never going to be a perfect party!

Your second point is very true as well - it becomes a bit of a cost/benefit scenario ie. is the extra cost incurred worth the extra benefit received.
