I'll be honest, what I know of Modesty mostly comes from Aadler. I've read exactly half of a book and I want to read more. I think she's a fascinating character, but I just didn't really have a firm grasp on the character. What I know of MacGyver comes from my memories of watching it, rather than actually having seen it recently.
I love that you took my little ficlet and turned the story into this! I really love it.
I'm glad you liked it. I'd definitely recommend finishing the first book (assuming that's the one you started) to see if you'd like to read the rest of the series.
This was fun to read, and matches the characters well enough as I know them. I was surprised to see sroni say she’d never read any of the books - I managed to acquire almost all of them, so the opportunity was there - but we spent a lot of time talking about Modesty and Willie, with special attention to how they brought unconventional thinking to a form of high art. In fact, Peter O’Donnell, through the Modesty Blaise books, was one of the strongest influences in my own self-education in how to do a good fight scene, along with William Goldman, Robert Heinlein, and (believe it or not) Dashiell Hammett.
Nice parts:
The cheongsam. Classic Modesty.
The observation about the timelessness of the chignon (also classic, albeit turned into a cliché by visual media).
How Mac not only didn’t try, but never seriously considered, an escape attempt when dealing with two of the most accomplished fighters on Earth.
Her assurance that he wouldn’t ever encounter the particular vicious women she had mentioned.
The description of Willie as an insanely fit
( ... )
Glad you liked it--as I noted in the remixer's comments, I read the Modesty Blaise stories a few years before I regularly started writing fanfic, and she definitely fell into the category of genuinely strong heroines I enjoyed reading about from a young age.
