Chapter 22 of A Secret Gate is up today. Given the length of time it took to get it there, it ought to be a creation of flawless beauty and depth. I’m sad to say it isn’t; it has its moments, though

I know I sent you an email detailing some of my thoughts about your chapter, but I wanted to leave a public comment here as well.
YOu never cease to amaze me with your descriptive detail, and wonderful imagery! It's one of the many things I love about this story... that, and the wonderful way you describe the emotions that our beloved hobbits are feeling throughout the story, from Merry's ambivalence towards leaving Estella behind, to Pippin's confusion about Pervinca's bevavior; as I said before, just a delight to read!
This story remains my favourite LoTR fanfic, and by extension, my favourite fanfic period, because LotR is the only fanfic I read :D
Just came across this now and will read it posthaste. Didn't want you to think I was ignoring you...I spent a week out of town and am just now catching up on things.
It's weird that your photos would come out in a collage like that. Have you had any luck detangling them? If not, what sort of software are you using to get your photos from the camera to the computer? I'm not an expert on such things, but I could ask around.
Thank you, M! Take your time, though. I know it's long!
As for the pictures, I have them in IPhoto on my Mac, and the ones I'm using I exported to a folder on my desktop. I'm using the 'Insert Image' button while writing the post. They upload one at a time, but when I then make 2-3 spaces under a picture and upload another for that new space, it comes up just attaches itself to the picture that's already there. I haven't played with it for awhile; I'll have to try again and see if there's something else I could do. Like maybe write a caption for each one, which would make a little space anyway!
And now I'm done! Wonderfully evocative descriptions as always; your descriptive passages always do an excellent job of evoking all the senses, not just one or two. Pippin's conversation with his sister was quite moving...although it was upsetting that they had to go through all that, it seemed like it was what they both needed to clear the air between them. And Gardner and Geron are brilliant! I can just see my niece and nephew shaking "intruders" down for sweets in a couple of years' time. ;)
Regarding your picture woes...hmm, that's a new one on me. I've never used the "Insert Image" feature as far as I recall. When I want to post an image, I just upload it to my webspace and type in the link, although that only works if your webspace allows hotlinking. Maybe LJ's help staff could clear things up? Either way, hope we get to see some photos soon. :)
Thank you so much for reading, and for doing so with such care and insight. I love your comments and observations and I’m so pleased that you found so much to think about and enjoy in this offering.
I think I have inadvertently given the wrong impression about the business of lifting the little scene from the movie, so I will try to correct that impression now. The danger of playing with movie-verse is that you need to be very careful about extrapolating what you want without loading up a lot of stuff you have no use for. I didn’t really make clear that while I lifted the words and vision that Gandalf offered to Pippin in that moment, I did not lift with them the movie’s interpretation of that vision as regards Frodo. The fact is, I didn’t even see the connection, because I knew where Frodo was going at the end of the film, even if PJ, for the sake of what he supposed to be a plebeian audience, suggested otherwise. I just laid my interpretation right over his, and kept moving. I assumed (perhaps erroneously) that all Tolkien readers

I perhaps was also not clear in my musings. I really didn't think you were writing in movie verse; nothing else in what you've written strays that far from canon. My comment about what Pippin might have said to Merry was a sort of speculation about what Movie-verse Pippin might have said or thought, after having the conversation with Gandalf brought to mind, and wasn't supposed to apply specifically to your story. I had just never thought about taking the extrapolation far enough to realize that in the movie, Pippin does have some idea about where Frodo is going. While watching the movie, I knew where he was going, and as you said, that was enough for the moment.
And I had forgotten the conversation in Chapter 9. I read all of those early chapters in such a bunch, that the details of them have become a little blurred. I will have to go back and re-read some of it, to fix it more firmly in my mind. It is a very thought-provoking story, and does deserve careful consideration.
Oh, I see what you meant! I'm sorry I didn't realize you meant movie-Pippin there! But in that case, yes: he must have told Merry what he knew, and in that universe they would have gone on to contemplate the idea together....and in that reality I could see Gandalf saying goodbye with a little wink.... :)
It's so confusing, isn't it? Coordinating book, movie bits and fan-fiction in a way that doesn't change the space-time continuum is a scary business!
Again, so many thanks. I thought I'd garnered all my comments last week; yours was a welcome surprise this morning!
