However, just 'cause our money is worthless doesn't mean that the crew and the captain aren't getting paid.

Hell, the captain might really be just a captain, and even though he's 'a great man' he might not be the top dog.

It could be possible he's doing it out of the goodness of his heart, but I seriously doubt that. So either he's getting paid to do it, somehow, or he's just... off his gourd. [Which he hasn't discounted either.]
