I just successfully reformatted, repartitioned, and reinstalled the OS on Vishnu. This sounds a lot less earth-shattering than it was, considering this is a process which begun on Sunday night but was bogged down by the fact that Vista just wouldn't find the fucking SATA drivers could not locate the local disk to install to, leading to me spending

Microsoft doesn't like half-recent SATA controllers, it seems. I had the very same problem with my own. Meh.

If you need Linux help, give me a holler. I don't use Ubuntu, but I'm more comfortable with it than most other distributions.

(Mine's Debian because if I could deal with thick, cutesy layers of optimistic obfuscation over my operating system, I'd have bought a Mac - but there's no denying Ubuntu is the easiest distribution of Linux to install and use if you didn't cut your teeth talking to Unix boxen on a 1200 bps TTY.)

Ubuntu's been recommended to me as newbie-friendly and idiot-proof, which is probably the way forward at the moment considering that I know next to nothing about Linux (and by next to I mean we're cuddling very closely now - if something goes wrong my first urge will be to hit Ctrl-Alt-Del). Hence the need for a 101...
