To my fellow lovers of wisdom. I have a quick question that requires an answer as soon as possible. Have any of you heard, or read, an argument that Plato was an egoist or hedoinst?
Many thanks!

I think I remember hearing egoist... not sure though. I thought I ran into some articles about plato being an egoist when I was writing my paper for hope's class on aristotle and egoism.

Hmm.. thanks... I did a quick look through JSTOR, and I found a couple articles that said Plato was anti-egoism... which really helps my paper... I'm reading an article where the author is trying to make an account of the Good, the result of which, i believe, is either hedonism or egoism, which I'm going to argue is bad. However, my argument won't work if Plato was dubbed an ego/hedonist while I was sleeping ;)
Any further suggestions from anyone would be greatly appreciated!

do a quick search on plato and altruism. I think the main arguments of plato's egoism focused on that. I looked for the old JSTOR articals I had printed out but couldn't find them. The good news is if I got them you certainly can, they have to be in there somewhere. The main one was by this lady, but I can't remember her name. She was arguing against plato being an egoist I believe, and she was a well known expert in the field. If I find anything I'll let you know, good luck on the paper =D

I've read a little Plato and from what I barely remember, he's into The Ideal realization of the Individual. Many of his dialogues focus on questions of personal strength and integrity. (The Republic focuses on the virtues/advantages of Justice and Wisdom, amoung other things.) While they focus on a wide variety of topics, they generally discuss questions of personal morality. The individual can best acheive personal satisfaction in a society where individuals live ambitiously, live moderately, and live wisely. So sorta sayeth Google ( ... )

Wisdom and foolishness are the same. Wisdom is an illusion.
