Classy

I just watched a BBC programme which went on about the social equalities in Britain and how it's almost impossible to get a top job without being rich, well connected and educated at private school and at one of the "top 20" universities ( Read more... )

I also did that quiz from seeing your link on Facebook and found it quite depressing!

I scored low for income, low for social and high for culture.

I am quite interested in seeing the results of their research. It will obviously be skewed towards people who watch documentaries on the BBC and/or who interact on social networks so I doubt it will be entirely representative of the British population.

This is fascinating stuff, I can't do it justice with a reply but I'll say something because I want to respond somehow!

I don't think this is a very unusual story; a lot of arts graduates don't do so well, but it's often hidden by income from a luckier partner (I'm effectively doing that for someone, being a luckier computer science grad). You've had some extra bad luck in the mix. Along similar lines, it's definitely amazing too how many women these days have to go back to work soon after having a child - it's a huge change from the old attitude - most couples seem to need both incomes, so it's not surprising being single doesn't add up easily.

A lot of life reminds me of the hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy line "Many men of course became extremely rich, but this was perfectly natural and nothing to be ashamed of because no one was really poor --- at least no one worth speaking of. "

My dad was a teacher too. Made it hard to do adventurous things that might have damaged HIS reputation. Studied journalism too. Never worked in it though. Turns out you make less than a teacher and work three months more a year.
Having little money is hard. Just a little more would be nice, but year after year the little we get is eroded by higher fees and less coverage.
Keep at it Elise (your work I mean). Hopping on a train to do a show. Pecking away at your stories and poems. Making movies. Chatting away on Youtube with yer drippy vowels.
Somehow you will earn something great.

I really enjoyed reading this, it casted a shadow on my positive attitude as I have saved to buy my education also. It was not a happy journey, I now work a job that has nothing to do with my degree..
